some background of my first reading experience =)
Honestly, I started to have the ability to read when I was in standard 1, it was almost by the end of that year when I figured out that I could read and spell correctly. The first book that I bought was actually a comic, it was Crayon Shin Chan volume 7. I still remember the volume and how happy I was during that time. It was like a child who just got her first toy and actually knew how to use it. Before that, I would just look at the books as objects and just attracted by the colorful colors and the image inside. However, after I had discovered my reading ability, I was so excited and kept reading everything that was possible to be read, including a signboard at the road!
Afterwards, I started to go to library at school whenever I could. I really enjoyed myself and started to borrow books from school. I love books, perhaps you can say I’m a bookworm. I took care of all my novels very well as if they were still new. After I reached standard 4, my dad still bought me that Crayon comic. I never miss a volume and now it’s already up to 40 volumes, which is only 3times a year each volume will be published. My dad started to buy a lot of science encyclopedias and English books during that year. As I grew up, I read a lot of books by R.L. Stine, L.J. Smith, Anne rice and many more. They were over thirty collections of novels from different authors. Most of them were horror stories or mysterious killers. I grew up feeding knowledge about shape shifters, vampires, witches, werewolves and other unique characters from horror fantasies.
I still remember when I was in form two, I read a lot of books compared to any other year in my whole life. I would read any novel in class even when my teacher was teaching in front of the class. I would bend my head down and hid the book under my table to read silently. Since I loved all those books, I recorded all the details in my own personal diary including the synopsis, author and publisher. It’s quite hard to recall all the books now since I have lost the diary. During that time, I could finish a book which was about 300 to 400 pages in just a day. That was only a day, so imagine a month? Maybe you can guess how many books I had read just during that particular age and year.
Surprisingly, my English vocabulary had started to increase ever since. Until now, I realise how much my reading habit has helped me a lot through my school years and studies. Last but not least, I would like to thank my dad for providing me all those good books from great authors. He’s the one who actually inspired me to read all those horror novels. If he were too strict and asked me to read only academic books, I don’t think it would trigger my interest to read. Thanks dad, you are the coolest!
